Asians want to look caucasian? I don’t think so. September 2, 2008

|Music| ‘A thousand miles’ – Vanessa Carlton

A few weeks ago I came across this youtube video of the show ‘Tyra’ (hosted by none other than Tyra banks, of course) and the topic that day was plastic surgery. More specifically, plastic surgery among ASIANS. Now even though the term used was asians, I’m gathering that it only refers to oriental asians, which are, if you do not already know, chinese, japanese, koreans and the like.

Tyra was sitting on her couch with the I-am-a-strong-powerful-21st-century-woman look that she always has on the show, with her guest, a young korean american woman in her 20s.

So what was the woman there for? I’m getting to that bit. The korean american woman had undergone plastic surgery to obtain(I’m not sure if this is the right word to use but is there any other way of putting it?) double eyelids because she felt that they looked better than single eyelids, and also because she hated the way her single eyelids were the reason why she got teased back in school.

But then Tyra, “mature”, “sensitive”, “I am so concerned for you and I will try my best to help you” Tyra said “I don’t believe you” and accused the korean american woman of undergoing surgery to look more caucasian. Because Tyra seems to so firmly believe that any non-caucasian(usually having dark hair and brown eyes) who undergoes plastic surgery to change their <insert name of non caucasian ethnicity> features or dyes their hair to a non natural colour(for their race) is deliberately taking a step closer to looking caucasian.

Now THIS is where she pissed me off.

Sure, some non-caucasians might change their looks to LOOK caucasian, but its not ALWAYS the reason why they change their looks.

Let’s use global warming as an analogy. Factory emissions are a cause of global warming, no? (Sulphur dioxide and all) But does it FULLY acount for global warming? Is it the ONLY reason why global warming and climate change exists? NO. You have deforestation, you have cars and you ALSO have agriculture.

Similarly, some non-caucasians MIGHT undergo plastic surgery to look more caucasian, but it does not mean that ALL of them do it for the purpose.

I cannot understand why Tyra assumes that when a single-eyelided asian wants double eyelids, it’s to look caucasian. Why can’t the reason for the korean american woman wanting double eyelids be wanting to look like a double-eyelided asian instead? Not ALL asians have single eyelids. Double-eyelided asians EXIST. I, a pure chinese, am a living example. And this is not by any means boasting because 70% of the asians in my community have double eyelids as well.

And to further “authenticate” her claims that the korean american woman did it to look caucasian, Tyra pulled herself into it as well by saying, “LOOK, look at this”, while grasping her blonde-dyed hair, “THIS is FAKE. It does not make me caucasian but its a STEP. You get me? A STEP.”

(Note, speech may be somewhat altered because I cannot remember the exact words but the idea behind it is the same)

And then for some reason I cannot comprehend the audience burst into loud applause. I’m guessing its because Tyra “admitted” to succumbing to the desire of wanting to look caucasian and hence “abandoning” her natural features.

Ok, so now she’s saying that whenever a non-caucasian dyes her hair, she is doing it to look caucasian because only caucasians have non- black/dark brown hair.

Now, I had always thought that Tyra was an OK person. But this episode of her self-hosted show has led me to think otherwise. In fact, I now find her extremely narrow minded.

Does she have ANY idea how many reasons there are behind why people change their looks? Just because a person wants to look better does not imply that he/she wants to look caucasian. We all know very well that EVERY race has good looking people. Beauty is NOT limited to only a particular race. The person does not necessarily have to look caucasian to be good looking. This, however, does not mean that caucasians are NOT good looking.

(Yes, I am taking great pains to scan my post and make sure that I am not making any offensive remarks about any race)

Sure, when people dye their hair, the colour of their hair MAY be a caucasian hair-colour, but it does not mean that they do it to make themselves look like a person of another race. Why can’t they do it to look more interesting or stand out of the crowd? Why should we stick with having the same hair colour as everyone(applicable only to non caucasians) when we have the means available to make ourselves stand out, especially when we WANT to stand out?

So you mean that if in the future, I want to highlight my hair dark red its a step that I’m deliberately taking to look more caucasian?

Come on, I have NEVER seen anyone have this colour as their natural hair colour. You have red hair, yes. But in reality its just orangey brown or auburn. Not deep maroonish violet.

And can you vouch for the thousands of people who dye their hair blue or purple or electric green? If asians do that are THEY doing it to look more caucasian? They cannot be, because no caucasian has blue or green or purple as their natural hair colour.

And this post is by no means racist. I just felt really offended because I felt that Tyra was attacking members of my own race(I know the woman was korean, but still, koreans and chinese look alike) and stereotyping, REALLY BADLY.

But before some people start jumping to conclusions:

1. It does not mean that I agree with non-caucasians undergoing plastic surgery.

2. It does not mean that single eyelids are, in any way, inferior to double eyelids.

Now, thank you for reading my long, rambling wall of text.

I never saw this episode, but it does sound quite anglo-centric of Tyra. She can sometimes get carried away and just because the western standard of beauty is the industry she’s in, she can over step her mark and assume whats true for her, is true for everyone. You’re right to speak out against this, nice post.

  2. Alyssa Says:

I haven’t seen this episode , but I know what you mean. My friend is Korean and she got her eyelids done so her eyes would stand out more(not to look Caucasian). I love the Asian culture but I’m not going to get my eyes done to look Asian LOL. Not everyone is going to get surgery done to look Caucasian….maybe they just don’t like something about them , so they go and get surgery done.

  3. Nita Says:

    Hey,

I’m Asian too and I have double eyelids ^^

From what I’m hearing about Tyra, I’m having second thoughts about her too… she seems pretty ok on America’s Next Top Model, but I’m gonna search up the vid that you’re talking about! =D

Anyways, great post.. I loved the way you compared the caucasian thing to global warming and such ><

    Keep up the great work!

I completly agree with you. Good job writting this article, it completly changed the way I see Tyra now. She’s indeed narrow minded!!

  5. jo Says:

Hi! Yes I’ve watched that episode. I honestly cringed for the poor girl but her lame excuse about how she felt her eyes were not as youthful at the age of 25, I was slightly offended because I’m almost 25 and I don’t think we should be jumping to plastic surgery. ok going off topic (sorry, just my opinion)

Everyone has eyelids. Maybe that small line isn’t as noticeable on everyone but it’s there!

yes I understand your point completely. In highschool, my best friend (who is chinese/filipino descent) died her hair blonde. Our school principal immediately wanted her to dye her hair back to black (this is after paying $$$ and bleaching her hair to death and now she has to pour more chemicals into her hair) simply because you’re not allowed to color your hair. the other girls who were caucasian in the school who dyed their hair red/blond/ went darker, put highlights etc were never told to dye their hair back to its natural color. My friend’s dad came into school and blasted the principal on just because his daughter is Asian doesn’t mean she’s not allowed to dye her hair blonde or red. So yeah, that’s my input.

  6. colombian girl Says:

I think that when she made her nose job, and when she uses something to make her hair smooth she’s trying to lok more caucasian… and less black so…

  7. nicki Says:

    i definitely agree.
After watching that show I was absolutely furious. It was as Tyra WANTED to hear that all minorities want to look Caucasian.
As a korean, I grew up hearing that double eyelids were something to be desired(Not from everyone though. Alot of korean ladies I know think that single eyelids are more “charming”).
It wasn’t b/c it made you look caucasion. It just looked nicer by making your eyes appear brighter. Just like how women want full, voluminous hair: It just looks nicer.

One time when I was a girl I gave myself a double eyelid by pushing my eyelid in with a hair pin and it turned out a bit thick (I don’t have a crease)
I looked Caucasian. When I showed my mother, she thought it strange and said double eyelids had to be thin and delicate to be pretty.
so much for all asians wanting to look white.
I also grew up hearing from people that they want my creaseless eyes, that they’re big yet mysterious. (lol not to be conceited) But the point is, I don’t have double eyelids, nor do I wish too. To be honest, I love them, and Tyra (whom I once admired) is one hypocritical bitch.

  8. emily Says:

I agree completely. Some asians (especially those born in a western country) MAY want to look more caucasian, but that certainly doesn’t mean all asian people do.

I have many asian friends and I think all of them are proud to be asian. A main reason for wanting double eyelids in the teenage asian community is because of the ulzzang look.

I really dislike how some white people think that everyone wants to be caucasian. I cannot see how the white race is superior or better look. All races can be beautiful. People should accept that many are proud of who they are!

  9. yL Says:

I saw that on youtube and it got me so mad. The korean single was also saying how her eyelids drooped. Well, Tyra apparently did not believe it saying’ you’re only 20 why would your eyes droop? don’t make excuses’. How inconsiderate. I am fifteen and I am Hong Kongnese. I have really thick eyelids too. And my eye lids droop but still keeping the shape of the fold. I don’t know. I just think this episode shows Tyras’ stereotypical side.

  10. candycat Says:

    Hi,

After reading your text I felt the urge to say that all you’re talking about is absolutly right. I saw that video myself a long time ago and I agree on your opinion (btw im black). Changing yourself doesn’t automatically mean you want to look caucasian. Why do people always base their stuff on white people lol?! I’ve seen documentaries on Africans dying their hair red or blond. Well sorry but they do it because it has something to do with their culture and certainly NOT to be white!

Tyra, in my opinion is just one of those many persons that outstand because they have money and nothing more! Forget her she doesn’t have anything better to do LOL!

Anyways whatever people say it doesn’t matter. Just live your lives and do what you think will keep you happy. Life is just not long enough for those stupidities!

  11. Iku Says:

Not everyone, but some asians (including myself) wants to look more western. I do live in a western country and I think most western people are so much more beautiful than I could ever be (mainly due to my stupid eyelids and flat nose.)

  12. krisangel Says:

i saw this episode and like you I was also furious!!!

hell no! we asians dont want to look caucasian/white!! i dont!!!

my reactions to tyra were “r u crazy???!!!” she was so mean as if she knew everything……

just bcuz she’s black and have lived in racists america doesn’t mean we asians r the same……

and the audience starts clapping agreeing to her!!! oh gosh i wanted to tell them “dont be so concieted!!”

they r so conceited, saying we want to look like them!!! they acutually think we want to look like them ugh! they think everything is about them

i feel prettier being an asian….(’-')

just to let u know i have natural double eyelids but my sis doesn’t

  13. Chelsea Says:

Lol, Tyra is only accusing the korean lady of trying to look Caucasian because she’s trying to look white herself. Many of her episodes are brimming with hypocrisy anyway.

& it is true that Asians can have double lids. I’ve heard that about a third of Chinese people do. Most of my family do anyway.

  14. Geraldine Says:

You know what, I was watching that episode and her reaction also pissed the hell outta me. I used to like Tyra, but after this episode, I just think that she is such a hypocrite.
